Bed size: Twin XL. Benedictine’s floor plans list the bed as a Twin XL mattress with 14.5 in of under bed height, and the packing list says Twin XL bed sheets. The college publishes no mattress width — the bare numbers printed beside the bed outline on the Guadalupe and Newman drawings are not labelled as the mattress.

What Benedictine College housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- A four-year live-on requirement. Benedictine states it flatly: it is "a four-year residential institution" and "all traditional undergraduates are required to live on campus for four years." Most colleges require one year, some two. Four is at the strict end nationally and it changes what a dorm purchase is worth.
- The college publishes 14.5″ of under-bed clearance and never publishes the mattress size. Five hall pages carry the identical line: "Bed: Twin XL mattress, 14.5″ under bed height." The clearance is given to a tenth of an inch. The mattress dimensions appear nowhere on the site. 14.5″ is workable for standard under-bed bins but rules out taller rolling drawer units.
- Ten of fifteen halls carry no mattress spec at all — and McDonald Hall says plain "twin." Its furniture list reads "two twin beds/bunk beds" with no XL anywhere on the page, while the college-wide packing list tells every student to buy Twin XL sheets. A McDonald resident has no published way to tell which is right.
- Instant Pots are banned by name — the packing list spells it "instapots." Air fryers, hot plates, skillets, toaster ovens, grills and sun lamps go with them. Essentially no heating appliance is permitted except a microwave and a coffee pot.
- Candle warmers and incense are banned, which covers wax warmers — the flameless product students buy precisely because candles are banned.
- Extension cords are on the recommended BUY list. This is genuinely counter-typical: most universities ban extension cords outright and require surge protectors instead. Benedictine tells students to bring cords and publishes no surge protector requirement at all.
- Electric blankets and heating pads are explicitly permitted. Many colleges ban both as fire risks. Worth knowing before you leave one at home.
- Residence Life publishes nothing whatsoever about air conditioning. Not one of the fifteen hall pages mentions it. The only AC claim anywhere on the site — "all halls are air conditioned" — sits on a summer conference-rental marketing page, and it names only ten of the fifteen halls. Meanwhile the packing list tells every student to bring a personal fan.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first, and check the bed before you buy sheets if you are in McDonald.

Fridge & microwave rules
No traditional hall supplies a fridge or microwave in the room — every one has a communal kitchen instead, and the apartments and houses have full kitchens with a stove, oven and refrigerator (though a microwave is not listed as supplied in any of them). Worth noting: Turner and Newman, the two freshman men’s halls, are the only halls whose communal kitchens do not list a microwave, while both freshman women’s halls do. For your own, the one published limit is a mini-fridge smaller than 4 cubic feet — stated twice, on the bring list and the prohibited list. No microwave wattage cap is published and no amperage limit is published. The handbook sections that would carry them could not be read, so treat any wattage figure you see quoted for Benedictine as unverified. No appliance rental programme exists.
What you cannot bring
Pets other than fish, alcohol, tobacco anywhere on campus grounds, and candles. On appliances: Instant Pots, air fryers, hot plates, skillets, grills, toaster ovens, halogen lights, sun lamps, electric heaters, gas appliances, and refrigerators over 4 cubic feet. Candle warmers and incense — so wax warmers are out. Playing a musical instrument in your room is banned, and speakers may not be placed in windows or on radiators. Permitted and worth knowing: Command strips are the college’s named recommended adhesive, thumbtacks and painter’s tape are acceptable in St. Scholastica and Guadalupe specifically, and extension cords, electric blankets, heating pads, popcorn poppers and coffee pots are all on the permitted list. Bed risers, adhesive LED strips, curtains and security cameras are addressed nowhere — and given lofts are banned in nine named halls and freshman beds arrive bunked, ask before buying risers.
Who has to live on campus
All four years. Commuter status is granted only on a published list of qualifications: non-traditional student status, age 23 or older, living with parents or a legal guardian within 30 miles of Atchison, marriage, membership of a religious order, full-time employment by the college, having dependent children, fifth-year senior standing, studying abroad, having lived in the Atchison area unenrolled for at least a year, or student teaching at a placement 50 or more miles away. That list is published on the transfer admission page and is not restated for continuing students. No penalty for non-compliance is published anywhere. The one published financial exposure is a withdrawal rule: room charges refund pro rata only through the 20th day of a semester, and after that you are billed in full for a room you no longer occupy. Every hall is single-sex, and guests are welcome noon to midnight Sunday through Thursday and noon to 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

An honest caveat: the Student Handbook’s residence hall sections — the authoritative text on appliances, microwaves, refrigerators, lofts, adhesives and windows — could not be retrieved, so everything here comes from the college’s secondary pages. Confirm the mattress size, whether McDonald differs, the microwave wattage and the AC situation with Residence Life at 913.360.7500 before you buy.
