Bed size: Eastern Michigan is split. The residence halls, The Village and 601 West Forest are Twin XL. Lakeview, Westview and Cornell Courts are Full — EMU states this in its move-in guide under a heading called Bedding Size. No mattress measurement is published; the 85.5 in figure on the hall pages is the bed frame, which is longer than any Twin XL mattress.

What EMU housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Lakeview, Westview and Cornell Courts have FULL beds, not Twin XL — EMU states it plainly in the Move-In Checklist: "Twin XL: Residence Halls, Village, 601WF. Full Bed: Lakeview, Westview, Cornell." That covers a large share of upper-class housing.
- Wise Hall publishes "79 in. x 39 in." and calls it an extra-long twin — one inch shorter than the Twin XL mattress that is meant to sit on it, while every other hall publishes 85.5 inches. The number and the label contradict each other on the same page.
- The 85.5-inch figure is a frame, not a mattress — 5.5 inches longer than a Twin XL. EMU publishes it in a list beside room, closet and window dimensions with no label distinguishing the two. Buy bedding to the mattress, not to that number.
- Adhesive LED light strips are banned, and EMU names the substitute — "please use 3M Command Brand products for this use." Both the strips and the adhesive hooks are among the highest-volume dorm purchases there are.
- Purchased bed risers are banned, not just homemade lofts and cinder blocks. Very few schools ban retail risers outright.
- Drapes, curtains and any self-installed window treatment are banned — most schools permit a tension rod.
- 3D printers, fog machines, inflatables, water chairs, tanning beds and electric fireplaces are all named bans, along with scented plug-ins and wax melters, which EMU classifies as fire hazards.
- Personal AC is banned except in Cornell Courts and 601 West Forest — but the Move-In Checklist bans AC units flat, with no exception, so a Cornell resident reading it would wrongly conclude they cannot bring one. Both buildings publish an AC Unit Application.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — the LED strips, the Command-strip alternatives, the risers and the curtains are all banned.

Fridge & microwave rules
No in-room fridge or microwave in the residence halls — the halls have shared kitchenettes with microwaves on the floors instead. The Village, Lakeview, Westview, Cornell Courts and 601 West Forest all supply a full-size fridge and stove. Personal fridges are capped at 4 cubic feet, and personal microwaves are permitted with no wattage limit published. Note that the fridge limit appears only in the Move-In Checklist PDF — the Guide to Campus Living, which is the governing handbook, carries no appliance size limit at all. Air fryers are allowed but must be used in a common or apartment kitchen, never in a room.
What you cannot bring
Pools, hot tubs, water chairs, waterbeds and tanning beds; fog machines; 3D printers; candles, candle warmers, incense and scented plug-ins; wax and oil melting devices; Bunsen and alcohol burners; drapes, curtains and any self-installed window treatment; space heaters; portable fireplaces including electric ones; air conditioning units except in Cornell Courts and 601 West Forest; hookahs; self-balancing scooters and Segways; live trees and wreaths; personally built lofts, cinder blocks and purchased bed risers; portable dishwashers, washers and dryers; inflatables; adhesive LED light strips and any adhesive hooks — EMU names 3M Command Brand as the only permitted alternative; halogen and upward-facing lamps; and extension cords that are not surge protected.
Who has to live on campus
One year. All first-year students must live on campus unless they are commuting from their primary guardian's permanent address within 50 miles — that single commuter exemption is the entire published list. No exemption is published for marriage, dependents, veteran status, age, medical need or financial hardship. EMU publishes no penalty for simply not applying. What it does publish, and what actually bites, is the contract: move out without an approved release and "the resident continues to be financially responsible for all room and meal plan charges for the remainder of the academic year." Releases are granted only for withdrawal, transfer, student teaching, graduation, study abroad or dropping to five credit hours or fewer — and going fully online does not release you.
Rates and rules from EMU room rates, compiled August 2026. The Cornell Courts and 601 West Forest hall pages still publish 2025-26 rates that differ from the current rates page.
