Truman State University has room-dimension data for 7 residence halls. Published room sizes range from about 89 to 297 sq ft, with a median of 174 sq ft. Find exact width × length and square footage for each hall below, then preview your layout in the visualizer.
Bed size: Truman is a standard twin campus, not an extra-long one. Its residence life guidebook gives the mattress as 36 in by 76 in, and the packing list says bed linens, standard twin. A longer bed exists only by request, and only if you are 6 ft 4 in or taller.

What Truman State housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- Truman is a standard-Twin campus, not a Twin XL campus. Do not buy Twin XL sheets. The published mattress is 36″ × 76″ — four inches shorter than a Twin XL and two inches narrower than any retail twin. Truman’s own what-to-bring page says it in words too: bring "bed linens (standard twin)." A Twin XL fitted sheet will sag badly on this bed.
- The dimension is not on any Residence Life page. The furniture page says only "One twin-sized standard length mattress" with no inches. The 36″ × 76″ figure appears on a live Truman-hosted page and in two Truman PDFs — three documents, one number, none of them where a student would look.
- Extra-long beds exist, but only if you are 6′4″ or taller. Truman states it plainly: you may request one in the Housing Portal at that height. The dimensions of the extra-long mattress are not published either — and given the standard bed is 76″, you cannot assume the long one is 80″.
- Humidifiers and dehumidifiers are both banned. Most universities permit humidifiers and plenty actively recommend them for dry winter dorm air. Truman lists "Dehumidifier/humidifier" on its prohibited appliances list.
- Toaster ovens are banned but air fryers are approved — the inverse of nearly every other campus in the country. You can buy an air fryer at Truman.
- Instant Pot is on the approved list and "Pressure Cooker" is on the prohibited list — the same page. An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. Call 660-785-4227 before you spend the money.
- Extension cords are capped at 6 feet, and must be grounded 3-prong, 15-amp minimum. A length cap is uncommon and it rules out most of the 10- and 12-foot cords sold as dorm cords.
- Command strips are named as a damage risk, not recommended. Truman lists them alongside duct tape, glue and nails as materials that damage paint, and recommends poster tack instead. This is the opposite of what most schools tell you.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — the sheets alone are the wrong size, and the appliance list is unusual in both directions.

Fridge & microwave rules
Nothing is supplied in the room — kitchens are shared. Truman publishes no cubic-foot limit at all. The fridge rule is a box, not a volume: "Small Refrigerator (2′ × 3′ × 2′)", so check height ≤ 36″, width ≤ 24″, depth ≤ 24″ instead of cubic feet. That envelope is far more generous than the typical campus cap and a 4.5 cu ft mini-fridge fits comfortably. Microwaves: the handbook allows 1,000 watts or smaller while the FAQ says smaller than 1,000 — they disagree at exactly 1,000 W, so buy under it. There is also a genuinely cheap rental: a MicroFridge, 2.9 cu ft with a microwave on top, for $150 for the entire year, registered through the housing application before 1 August. No refund after that date.
What you cannot bring
Humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Portable air conditioners and space heaters. Halogen lamps and heat lamps. Toaster ovens, convection ovens, deep fat fryers, electric fry pans, electric grills, electric woks, waffle irons, crepe and sandwich makers, hamburger cookers, fondue pots, warming trays, hot plates and hot pots. "Pressure Cooker" — while "Instant Pot" sits on the approved list. Hot-oil popcorn poppers are banned but hot-air ones are approved. Charcoal grills, and propane anywhere. Candles and incense. Weapons, ammunition, bows and arrows, airsoft guns, fireworks. Waterbeds, live cut trees, and beanbags with polyethylene fill. Carpet tape, duct tape and adhesives generally; Command strips are named as damaging and poster tack is the recommended alternative. Approved and worth knowing: air fryers, bread machines, food dehydrators, rice cookers, toasters, coffee makers, electric kettles and non-halogen lamps.
Who has to live on campus
Just one year, first-year students only — short by national standards, not long. Truman states it flatly: "All first-year students are required to live on campus." A January entrant is bound for one semester. Four exemptions are published: living within 50 miles with an immediate family member; released for marriage, parenthood or being over 21; transferring in with 30 or more credit hours; or an approved extenuating circumstance. No exemption deadline or form is published anywhere — the housing forms page lists neither, and tells you to call 660-785-4227. Breaking the housing contract and moving off campus mid-term carries "penalties of a minimum of $1000 USD up to the full cost of housing." That is the only penalty figure Truman publishes.
