Western Carolina University has room-dimension data for 14 residence halls. Published room sizes range from about 104 to 345 sq ft, with a median of 188 sq ft. Find exact width × length and square footage for each hall below, then preview your layout in the visualizer.
Bed size: XL Twin. Every Western Carolina hall page lists an XL Twin Mattress, and no measurement is published. Note that the university contradicts itself: its international arrival page tells students it will take them to buy sheets for a Twin bed, which will not fit an XL Twin.

What Western Carolina housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The three cheapest halls are the three with no air conditioning. Albright-Benton, Buchanan and Robertson are the only halls whose pages say "Airconditioned: No" — and they hold the two lowest rates on the whole table. WCU never connects those two facts on the rates page.
- Personal air conditioners are banned outright. There is no exception for the three halls that have none. If you are assigned to Albright-Benton, Buchanan or Robertson, a fan is your only legal cooling — and ceiling fans are banned too.
- Curtains are banned. Any window covering is banned. WCU supplies microblinds and students may add nothing over the window. This is genuinely unusual and it kills a whole product category before you buy it.
- Coffee makers are banned by name. So are air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens, crockpots, hot plates, induction cooktops and Instant Pots. Most universities permit a drip coffee maker or a Keurig. WCU does not.
- Incandescent lamps are banned, not just halogen. Buy LED only.
- Wireless routers, weightlifting equipment and personal security cameras are all banned. So are drones, amplifiers, portable laundry equipment, icemakers needing a water line, TV wall mounts — and taxidermy supplies, including animal carcasses.
- WCU publishes no mattress dimensions anywhere. Fourteen hall pages, the FAQ and the housing guide all say the same three words — "XL Twin Mattress" — and never an inch figure. Retail Twin XL is 38″ wide; a great many university XL twins are 36″. You cannot tell which WCU has from anything it publishes.
- Its own advice contradicts its own rulebook. The FAQ tells you to bring a surge protector; the housing guide bans extension cords and never mentions surge protectors. The FAQ caps fridges at 4.5 cu ft and microwaves at 800 W; the binding guide contains neither figure.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — check your building first, especially if you are in Albright-Benton, Buchanan or Robertson.

Fridge & microwave rules
No hall supplies a fridge or microwave in the room, with one exception: Robertson is an efficiency apartment with a full-size refrigerator, stove and sink in the room — and at $2,972 a double it is cheaper than a plain Judaculla double. Everywhere else you buy your own. The FAQ caps a fridge at 4.5 cubic feet or 5 amps and a microwave at 800 watts. The binding housing guide contains neither number — its only appliance rule is "Refrigerators > 5 amps." The 5-amp cap is the one figure both documents agree on, so buy to that. WCU recommends only one of fridge, microwave, TV and fan per room. No appliance rental programme is published.
What you cannot bring
Air conditioners. Curtains or any window covering. Coffee makers, air fryers, Instant Pots and pressure cookers, toasters, toaster ovens, crockpots, hot plates, induction cooktops. Halogen and incandescent lamps — LED only. Ceiling fans. Extension cords. Space heaters and electric blankets. Contact paper, wallpaper and removable stickers including glow-in-the-dark stars. Wireless routers. Weights and weightlifting equipment. Any student security or surveillance camera. TV wall mounts. Candle warmers, scent warmers and plug-ins. Aquariums over 10 gallons. Drones, hoverboards and e-scooters. Waterbeds. And, listed by name, taxidermy supplies including animal carcasses. For hanging things, WCU names painters’ tape, removable Command strip hooks and tacky putty as the only permitted methods — nails, screws and double-sided tape are out, and adhesive LED strips are never addressed either way.
Who has to live on campus
First-year students must live on campus for two full academic years; new transfers for one. Exemptions cover students 21 or older at entry, married students, students with dependents, veterans with 18 months’ active duty, seniors with 90+ hours, part-time students under 6 hours, online-only students, and students living with a parent or guardian in Jackson or a contiguous county. The exemption form must be approved before the housing deadlines — no calendar date is published for it. The penalty is financial and it is steep. A student who owes the requirement and does not sign an agreement is billed room and food charges for a room they never occupy. A second-year who skips room selection is assessed $2,500. Cancelling after 1 June costs a $1,000 cancellation fee. One more thing: all halls close over December break and must be vacated.

Note that WCU moved its housing site — WCU Housing and Residence Life — and the old residential-living URLs that still rank in Google now 404. Reynolds Hall has disappeared from the 2026–27 rate table, the hall list and the site, with no closure notice published. Verify anything money-related directly with housing at 828.227.7303 before you buy.
