Bed size: Extra long twin. The residence hall checklist lists the mattress as extra long twin, and the housing page describes Burgess Hall as having two twin XL beds, bunked only. No measurement is published, and the apartment-style Mary Collier Baker building publishes no bed size at all.

What University of Sioux Falls housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

  • Command strips are banned by name. USF lists them alongside nails, screws and permanent adhesives under "leave at home." Command strips are the single most-recommended dorm product on the internet and they are prohibited here. Sticky tack and blue painter’s tape are the named substitutes, and both are on the bring list.
  • LED light strips are banned, flatly, on the same list. Another top-selling dorm item you cannot use.
  • Jute-backed carpet only, and no tape to install it. Verbatim: "Fire safety codes require that only jute backed carpet be used. All carpet must be installed without the use of tape." That rules out most cheap area rugs, which come with rubber or latex backing.
  • Two current USF documents ban what the other one recommends buying. The Fire Safety Report says "no portable electrical appliances" are allowed in student housing. The official Residence Hall Checklist tells students to bring a refrigerator, an iron, a printer, a television and a desk lamp. Read literally they cannot both be right. Call before you spend on the strength of either.
  • Personal air conditioners and space heaters are both banned, and four of the six halls do not say whether they have air conditioning at all. Only Sullivan publishes in-room AC. Burgess publishes an air-conditioned lounge, which is not an air-conditioned room.
  • Empty alcohol containers are banned as décor, not just alcohol itself — verbatim, "empty alcohol containers are not allowed in the residence halls or elsewhere on campus." That rules out the bottle-and-can shelf décor students actually buy.
  • Personally purchased or built lofts are banned regardless of material, including the popular bed-lofting kits — USF frames only. Burgess is bunked-beds-only, so its residents cannot un-bunk.
  • Parking permits, technology, printing and paper transcripts are all free. Genuinely unusual, and it means no parking permit to budget for.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — Command strips, LED strips and a rubber-backed rug are all on the standard list and all banned.

Per academic year, based on double occupancy. The meal plan is a separate line and first- and second-year residents must take either the Block 175 ($4,510) or the Unlimited ($4,860). Add a $700-a-year General University Fee and a $100 housing deposit due 1 May. One gap worth knowing: single and triple rooms are offered on the housing application but no single or triple rate is published anywhere.

Fridge & microwave rules

A microwave already exists in every hall — the checklist states that microwaves, kitchenettes, washers, dryers, ironing boards and TV lounges are available in each residence hall. Mary Collier Baker apartments add a kitchenette per unit. Whether you may keep a personal microwave in your room is not published either way, and the fire safety report’s "no portable electrical appliances" line would ban one if read literally. For a fridge the rule is clear and generous: no larger than 4 cubic feet, where many schools cap at 3 to 3.6. No wattage limit and no amperage limit are published. No fridge-rental programme exists. Useful detail: USF supplies two power strips per room, so you may not need to buy one.

What you cannot bring

Command strips, nails, screws and permanent adhesives — sticky tack is the recommended substitute. Adhesive LED light strips. Air conditioning units and space heaters. Cooking appliances with exposed heating elements. Weapons of any kind, with no locked-storage exception published. Alcohol, including empty containers as décor; tobacco anywhere (USF is a tobacco-free campus); vaporizers. Outside antennas or satellites. Hoverboards. Pets other than non-carnivorous freshwater fish, tank up to 20 gallons. Personally purchased or built lofts of any material. Carpet must be jute-backed and installed without tape. Air fryers, Instant Pots, wax warmers, security cameras, curtains, extension cords and bed risers are all addressed nowhere — the checklist defers to the Student Handbook on appliance specifics, and the handbook’s housing section could not be read. Ask at (605) 331-6620 before buying any of them.

Who has to live on campus

First and second year, verbatim: "All unmarried, full-time, first and second year students are required to live on campus in residence halls as long as the space is available." You are excepted if you live with an immediate family member or guardian over 21 within a 50-mile radius — unusually generous, where most schools use 25 or 30 — or have completed four full-time semesters, or are at least 21 at the start of the semester, or are married. Anything else needs advance approval from the Director of Housing and Student Life. Application and the $100 deposit are due 1 May, assignments go out from July. No penalty is published for a required student who simply lives off campus. What is published applies once you are in: withdraw and charges prorate only to 10 weeks, meal plans only to 8, and moving out before the agreement ends means being "charged the full fee for room and board."

Two honest caveats: the prohibited items list, the 4 cu ft fridge cap and the loft rules all come from a checklist PDF dated 2024, and the only Student Handbook USF publishes is the 2024–25 edition whose housing section would not open.
