Bed size: UTC uses three different sizes and says so. Boling, Johnson Obear, Lockmiller and Stagmaier are extra-long twin at 36 in by 80 in. Most private rooms in Guerry, Decosimo, Stophel, Walker and UC Foundation are Full, as are the two-person rooms in Lockmiller. Shared rooms in Guerry are regular twin. UTC tells students to verify the size in Manage My Housing.

What UTC housing actually costs

Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules

UTC is not a Twin XL school. Five buildings — Decosimo, Stophel, UC Foundation, Walker, and Guerry private rooms — publish Full 54" x 75". Buy Full sheets there.
Where it is an XL twin, UTC publishes two different widths. The hall pages for Boling, Johnson Obear and Lockmiller say 39" x 80"; the FAQ says 36" x 80" for those same halls. Neither is the retail 38".
Mini-fridges are banned — "we provide fridges/mini-fridges in all our spaces." That single rule invalidates the standard dorm packing list. There is no cubic-foot limit because there is nothing to limit.
Command Hooks and Command Strips are banned by name, and so are adhesive LED light strips. UTC permits "approved adhesives" without naming a single approved product.
Five halls run building-wide seasonal HVAC — heat only from October to April. Boling, Johnson Obear, Lockmiller, Stagmaier and West Campus switch the entire building twice a year, so a warm week in November cannot be air-conditioned. A good fan is a load-bearing purchase.
Lofting is prohibited but bed risers are explicitly permitted — the reverse of most schools, and the packing list says so directly.
Guerry's shared-bedroom bed size is genuinely unresolved. The FAQ says regular twin, the hall page says only "twin-size," and the rate PDF says Twin XL. Three sources, three answers, five inches of length at stake.
The housing office's own rate sheet disagrees with the Bursar's on several halls — Johnson Obear private rooms are $4,602 on one and $4,090 on the other, a $1,024 difference over a year.

Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — do not buy a mini-fridge, Command strips or LED strips. Buy risers and a fan instead.

Per resident, per semester — all utilities included. UTC bundles electric, cable, high-speed internet, water, sewer, trash and laundry into the room rate, which makes its numbers more comparable to an all-in off-campus figure than most schools'. Meal plans are separate and mandatory for freshmen and sophomores: a freshman cannot go below $2,276 a semester, a sophomore below $950, and juniors and seniors may opt out. Add a $25 application fee and a $400 prepayment due within four days of assignment.

Fridge & microwave rules

UTC supplies a fridge in every space and bans you from bringing your own — "mini fridges are not permitted in residence halls (we provide fridges/mini-fridges in all our spaces)." There is no cubic-foot limit because there is nothing to limit. Microwaves are supplied in Stagmaier, West Campus, Palmetto Place, Decosimo, Guerry, Stophel, UC Foundation and Walker; Boling and Johnson Obear have none, and Lockmiller splits by room number — rooms x01 to x18 get a stove and no microwave, rooms x19 to x36 get a cooktop and a microwave. Where one is not supplied you may bring a UL-approved unit, with no wattage limit published. No cooking appliance may be used in a bedroom.

What you cannot bring

Command Hooks, Command Strips and adhesive LED light strips — all banned by name, with no approved alternative product named. Also mini fridges, weapons, drugs, alcohol, large knives (kitchen knives only), candles and candle warmers, incense, hookahs, fireworks, gas and charcoal grills, halogen lamps, fog machines, oil burners, space heaters, outside antennae, flammable liquids and animals. Lofted beds are prohibited but bed risers are explicitly permitted — the opposite of most schools. Fish in tanks up to 10 gallons, service animals and approved ESAs are the exceptions.

Who has to live on campus

One year. All single first-year students must live on campus for the full academic year. Three exemptions are published: living within a 45-mile radius with a parent or legal guardian, being married or having dependants, or a medical condition preventing campus living. Requests go through the Residency Exception Form and are "only permitted prior to the start of the Academic Year" — no actual deadline date is published. UTC also publishes no penalty for a first-year who simply does not live on campus: no fine, no hold, no stated consequence. The only published penalties are contractual — miss the four-day prepayment window and your assignment is cancelled, and the $400 is refunded in full before 1 May, half until 1 June, and not at all after.

Rates and rules from UTC housing rates and bed counts, compiled August 2026. UTC's housing rate sheet and the Bursar's fee schedule disagree on several halls by up to $512 a semester; the figures here follow the Bursar, which reconciles with the hall pages.
