St. Mary's University has room-dimension data for 10 residence halls. Published room sizes range from about 76 to 268 sq ft, with a median of 225 sq ft. Find exact width × length and square footage for each hall below, then preview your layout in the visualizer.
Bed size: St. Mary’s is a standard twin campus with two exceptions, which is the reverse of most schools. The university’s own what-to-bring page says every room is furnished with a bed with a standard-sized twin mattress, and that Chaminade Hall and Périgueux Hall have XL-twin mattresses. Leies Hall is listed as a twin bed. XL twin is available on request in limited numbers elsewhere.

What St. Mary’s University housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- The campus default is a regular Twin, not a Twin XL. St. Mary’s says it verbatim: every room is furnished with "a bed with a standard-sized twin mattress" — and then "Chaminade Hall and Périgueux Hall have XL-twin mattresses." Nine of eleven halls are regular Twin. Most universities are the exact reverse of this.
- The university’s own sheet advice is wrong. The what-to-bring page says "Regular or XL twin bed sheets (both will fit)." They will not. A regular twin fitted sheet is about five inches short on an XL twin mattress and will pop off the corners. If you are in Chaminade or Périgueux, buy XL.
- The two microwave rules contradict each other, and following the wrong one gets your microwave confiscated. The shopping page caps volume at 1.4 cubic feet and says nothing about watts. The handbook prohibits microwaves over 750 watts and says nothing about volume. A retail 1.4 cu ft microwave is essentially always 1,000–1,200 W. Buy a 700-watt, roughly 0.7 cu ft unit — it is the only purchase that satisfies both.
- LED strip lighting and wall decals are banned outright. Both lists say so, and the handbook gives the reason — they take the paint off on removal. LED strips are one of the highest-volume dorm purchases in the country and they are simply not allowed here.
- Pepper spray is banned. St. Mary’s classes it with tasers and guns as "anything illegal." Most universities permit it and many actively recommend it as a personal-safety item. This one runs against the grain and is worth knowing before you pack.
- Air fryers are named and banned twice. Crock-Pots are banned too, which effectively covers Instant Pots and every other multicooker — though St. Mary’s never says the words "Instant Pot."
- Périgueux supplies a full-size refrigerator and a microwave to each quad-suite. If you are assigned there you do not need to buy either. No other hall supplies anything in the room.
- Outlet splitters are banned while a surge-protected power strip is recommended. The flat plug-in multiplier is out; the strip with a breaker is in. Students conflate the two constantly.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — the sheets, the microwave and the LED strips are all wrong on a generic dorm list.

Fridge & microwave rules
Périgueux is the only hall that supplies them — a full-size refrigerator and a microwave in each quad-suite. Everywhere else, common-area kitchens exist in Chaminade, Leies, Lourdes, Bordeaux and Treadaway, but nothing is provided in the room. For a personal fridge both documents agree: 4.5 cubic feet maximum. For a microwave they do not agree, and this is the one to get right — the what-to-bring page caps volume at 1.4 cu ft and the handbook prohibits anything over 750 watts. Those regulate different things and a unit satisfying the first will almost always violate the second. Buy about 0.7 cu ft at 700 watts. No amperage limit is published and no appliance rental programme exists.
What you cannot bring
LED strip lighting and wall decals. Pepper spray, tasers, guns and knives over three inches. Air fryers, Crock-Pots, electric skillets, toaster ovens, hot plates, hot pots, grills, cappuccino makers and oil popcorn poppers — anything with an open heating element or coil. Halogen lamps, lava lamps, space heaters and fog machines. Electrical outlet splitters — a surge-protected power strip is the endorsed alternative. Candles, incense burners and anything with an open flame. Live Christmas trees. Decorative alcohol bottles and paraphernalia. Street or traffic signs, unless you can produce a purchase receipt. Pets other than fish. On walls: nails, screws, glue and anything leaving residue are banned, and Command strips are formally discouraged — the handbook warns they pull paint and recommends putty or Blu Tack. Window curtains are permitted, though: windows "may not be covered by foil, fabric, or other materials, except a properly mounted curtain," so a tapestry is out and a curtain is fine.
Who has to live on campus
New undergraduates with a permanent address outside Bexar County must live on campus if they are under 21 and within two years of high school graduation. How long is stated three different ways on three live pages — the FAQ says "a two year live on policy," the governing policy says a full academic year, and the Living on Campus page gives no duration at all. Six exemptions are published: family residence in Bexar County within approved zip codes, marriage, a documented medical condition, an academic internship or study abroad, pregnancy or dependents, and military relocation — but St. Mary’s warns that "fulfilling the requirements for exemption will not constitute an automatic release." Deadlines are 1 May for returning students, 1 July for new fall students, 1 December for spring. Miss it and you are automatically assessed a housing and meal plan charge — billed for a room and food you never use. Moving out mid-year carries further penalties "regardless of reason," set out in a contract section the university does not publish.

Two cautions: the housing FAQ page is still headed 2025–2026 and carries last year’s move-in dates, and Adele Hall is still listed as a current hall while its own page says it will not be available in 2026–27.
