Utah State University has room-dimension data for 15 residence halls. Published room sizes range from about 56 to 450 sq ft, with a median of 150 sq ft. Find exact width × length and square footage for each hall below, then preview your layout in the visualizer.
Bed size: Utah State publishes a heading that literally reads Mattress Sizes. Everywhere except Blue Square is Twin XL at 36 in by 80 in by 6 in. Blue Square private rooms are Full at 54 in by 74 in, and USU recommends queen sheets for them.

What USU housing actually costs
Heads up — this school breaks the usual rules
- USU publishes its Twin XL as 36" x 80" x 6" — two inches narrower than the retail standard, on eleven-plus separate pages. The 6-inch thickness matters too: deep-pocket sheets cut for 12 to 15 inches will be very loose.
- Blue Square private rooms are FULL, published as 54" x 74" — and USU tells students to buy QUEEN sheets. A queen is 60" x 80". Following USU's own advice gets you sheets six inches too wide and six too long. Buy Full.
- There is no live-on requirement at all. No first-year rule, no radius, no exemption process, because there is nothing to be exempt from. What USU has instead are age restrictions: Blue Square, Darwin and Lundstrom East are 19-plus.
- The cheapest room on campus is a trap. Richards Hall at $1,640 a semester looks like the bargain, but the meal plan is compulsory there at a minimum $1,400 — a true floor of $3,040, more than Morgan or Davis at $2,480 with no meal plan required.
- Scentsy-style wax and candle warmers are banned by brand name, alongside a 25-foot drone exclusion zone around every building and a ban on plastic, aluminium or paper stove liners.
- Alcohol and all tobacco are banned regardless of age, in every building, with smoking pushed 25 feet from entrances.
- Lofting and bunking are both banned, and only Canyon Crest, Central Suites and Ridge Point publish under-bed clearance — 30 inches, which is generous. No other hall publishes a bed height at all.
- USU still publishes rates for a demolished building. The 2025-26 rates PDF lists Mountain View Tower at $1,490 to $2,650 a semester; the building's own page says demolition began in 2025.
Buying the standard college checklist here will waste money — and if you are in Blue Square, ignore the university's sheet advice entirely.

Fridge & microwave rules
It varies by building and USU publishes it hall by hall. Bullen, Merrill, Snow, the Student Living Center halls and the Living Learning Community all supply a kitchen fridge and microwave; Lundstrom puts a mini-fridge in the bedroom; Richards has a microwave in the shared storage area. Canyon Crest, Central Suites and Ridge Point supply neither, and USU tells students to bring their own with an unusually practical warning: get one with a cord "at least 5 feet long," because the outlets are awkwardly placed and appliances must plug straight into the wall, never a power strip or extension cord. The only published limit is 1,500 watts — there is no cubic-foot cap and no microwave wattage cap anywhere.
What you cannot bring
Incense and burners, candles and open flames, candle warmers including Scentsy-type, open-coil units, halogen bulbs, flammable liquids, plastic, aluminium or paper stove liners, fuel-fired heaters, propane tanks over 5 lbs, hookahs, water bongs and vaporisers. Space heaters are allowed only if ceramic or oil-filled, UL-listed, under 1,500W, with tip-over protection and an 8-hour timer. Lofting and bunking are both banned, as is removing window screens. Animals are fish only, in tanks up to 20 gallons. Alcohol and all tobacco are banned regardless of age. 3M Command products are the only approved adhesive. Drones are banned inside and within 25 feet of any building.
Who has to live on campus
There is none. USU publishes no first-year requirement, no radius, no exemption process and no penalty — I checked the housing pages, the FAQ, the contract index and the full 2026-27 contract PDF. What USU has instead are age restrictions on where you may live: Blue Square, the Darwin buildings and Lundstrom East are all 19-plus, and Lundstrom East is female-only. The contract sets an eligibility floor of six credit hours to keep a bed. The penalties that do exist are for breaking a signed contract: the $200 deposit is forfeited after 15 April, a $200 late fee applies to spring terminations filed after 1 December, and walking away mid-year costs 75% of the remaining fees.
